The conference is taking shape and thanks are due to many who are involved in the planning and implementation of what is going to be a great district conference. Please consider attending this premier annual event. It is a chance to learn something and connect with fellow Rotarians.
Our district has undertaken the noble goal of planting a tree for every Rotarian member. This means we will be planting approximately 2000 trees before the end of the year.
The Rotary Clubs in District 5650 have done some amazing things - and continue to do them. The District knows about many of the activities - but cannot possibly know all that you do.
We would like to recognize clubs for outstanding projects at the awards presentation of the upcoming District Conference.
There were 43 people in attendance at the online meeting for Rotary District 5650 held May 10, 2018. Several clubs assigned proxies so in the end their were 23 clubs with 55 delegates voting. This constituted a quorum.
RYLA 2018 was by all accounts a big success this year. Held April 6-8 this was the 7th year of the District 5650 program and for the first time broke the 60 student mark.
The NAYEN 2018 conference held in Omaha was a big success thanks to Tim Schmad, Curt Peters, Joanne Peters, Steve Gerdes, Holly Hollenbeck, Hal Daub and a host of people from other districts.
One focus of the 2017-18 Rotary Year has been women’s empowerment. Carol Horner was asked to lead us through a visioning process to better understand how the district can be welcoming and empowering for women. She used a process called Appreciative Inquiry to help us explore the club environments that help women feel welcome and enable them to comfortably take on leadership roles.
Our district is in the process of developing a strategic plan to address human trafficking in our District. This is in response to a growing awareness of how serious this problem is in Nebraska and around the world. A few of us met recently to discuss developing a strategic plan to combat this scourge. Sharon Wherry is leading a committee to focus our energy as a district and see how best we can assist.
This past year two more clubs have decided to disband. The first was the Rotary club of Schuyler which made a decision to disband in December 2017. The second club is Omaha North Rotary which just recently decided to disband.
From Rotary International: The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect 25 May. Because Rotary staff members process the personal data of our European members, Rotaractors, program participants, and others, we’re obligated to comply with this new data privacy law.
Charley Thone, District Governor for Rotary District 5650 1996-97 passed away. Charley was a congressman representing Nebraska's 1st District and later the Governor of the State of Nebraska.

Past District Governor John Wolter has passed away. He was a member of Lincoln #14 and District Governor for Rotary District 5650 1985-86. Arrangements will be made through Butherus Maser & Love - details are not yet finalized.
A group of 13 participants started their Rotary Leadership Institute program on Saturday April 20. We also had two members who had completed all three parts of the program and graduate.
Clubs in Rotary District 5650 are asked to share information about events if those events are open to everyone (such as fundraisers) or will impact district leadership (such as District Governor). Event information can be posted to the District Calendar and the District Website.
