Rotary District 5650 Governor Newsletter June 2017
Greetings from District Governor Elect Tom Cardwell

I thought it would be good to bring you up to date on a number of District functions.

Before that I want to say that I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as your District Governor next year and I aim to take that responsibility very seriously.

Rotary District 5650 is actually looking pretty good these days (our membership is up) but we can still grow it and make it even better.  More members, more fellowship, greater impact on our communities and the world, continued emphasis on accountability, and plenty of fun while doing Rotary’s good work.  Gary Bren deserves great credit for all his work this last year on behalf of the district.  He has worked tirelessly to be a resource to clubs, inspire them and encourage them.  His mantra has been “the power of one” (meaning each of us can make a difference if we try).  Mine will be “We are a team”.  By that I mean an extension of what Gary has said.  The flip side of one person being dedicated to making a difference (each of us individually) is the synergy gained by working together, taking advantage of our collective wisdom.  One of the neat things about Rotary is the chance to connect with likeminded people who are determined to “do good”.

There is so much going on right now I am wondering how we will get it all done but I suspect we will this year and next and on into the future.
DG String (not a bathing suit)
You might know that I was one of the early beneficiaries of the DG String concept.  That concept was started by Jim Griesen.  Brian Moon followed Jim, Rod Bates followed Brian.  Gary Bren followed Rod and I am now assuming the reigns from Gary.

Razia’s Ray of Hope Foundation Educational Program
This joint venture between Omaha Suburban Rotary and Razia’s Ray of Hope Foundation has allowed the development of a very successful educational program for a girls.  In a visit with Roxy Orr, it is my understanding that Ed Walsh discovered the Ray of Hope Foundation a few years ago after learning of the “Three Cups of Tea” initiative.  The Ray of Hope Foundation seemed like a well-managed organization so Ed reached out to the founder Razia Jan to explore working together.
