Hello my fellow Rotarians!  I have just about finished my Club visits, only three more Clubs to go!  I have had such fun sharing Rotary with all the Members around our District.  Our Clubs and Members do really amazing stuff and I am so glad that I am learning all about it! If I have not been to your Club yet, please know I am really looking forward to it!

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month - a time for Rotary members to focus awareness on our involvement with literacy and education and recommit to finding solutions that meet the needs to address illiteracy and gaps in education. Rotary clubs all over the world, and right here in District 5650, are taking action to enhance basic education and literacy in their communities!

Basic education and literacy is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus. We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.

Here are a couple of resources that you can use to identify and address the needs in your community.

The first one is a publication that talks about Basic Education and Literacy Project Strategies.  This publication is intended to help you ask the right questions, identify real needs, and make the greatest possible impact with the time, energy, and resources you have at your disposal!

The second is the Basic Education and Literacy Action Group (BELRAG).  They are a network of Rotarians throughout the world who have a special interest in acting upon the mission and goals of Rotary International related to:
  1. Alleviate illiteracy;
  2. Enhancing literacy teaching and learning globally, and
  3. Helping to provide materials and equipment for literacy education at different levels.
Like all Action Groups, BELRAG is an autonomous association of likeminded Rotarians, partners of Rotarians, and Rotaractors working in partnership with Clubs and Districts on literacy projects of mutual concern.

Please email me if there is anything I can do to help!

Thanks for all you do to Create Hope in the World!

Kathryn
